Namir and I chose to celebrate a multicultural wedding, a reflection of our diverse backgrounds. I’m of Indian descent but was raised in Spain, while Namir, hailing from Iraq, grew up in the UK. From the very beginning, we envisioned a wedding that would allow our guests to embrace our rich heritage. Our multicultural wedding in Valencia, Spain spanned three days, featuring the Mehndi, Haldi, an Indian wedding merged with the Sangeet, and an English wedding.
For our Indian wedding, held at the majestic The Westin Valencia, my goal was to share the essence of my diverse upbringing with my friends and family. Born in Mumbai, India, and raised in the tropical paradise of Tenerife, Spain, my journey has been a beautiful fusion of contrasting cultures. Over the years, I’ve meticulously crafted exquisite Indian weddings in the most stunning locations, and the one constant element that has always defined my life and designs is vibrant colors, so when the time came for me to curate my own wedding vision, I envisioned a vivid celebration.
Growing up, I often accompanied my family on visits to my grandmother in Rajasthan, India. I have fond memories of strolling through narrow streets, where my eyes would catch the vibrant hues of buildings in shades like mustard yellow, terracotta red, burnt orange, and royal blues. It was during one of these visits that I was introduced to the grandeur of Hawa Mahal, a majestic palace with its stunning red facade that proudly stands in the heart of Jaipur. As I gazed upon it, I couldn’t help but notice a striking resemblance between its intricate design and the modernist architecture of The Westin Valencia’s facade, making it the perfect canvas for our Indian wedding. I drew inspiration from Hawa Mahal’s majestic facade and the vibrant hues of the Indian streets, blending them with the lush greenery that surrounded me in Tenerife. The result was a palette of bright and colorful flowers, including gorgeous roses, sunflowers, carnations, and my beloved dahlias, all in shades of mustard yellow, burnt orange, and terracotta red.
The central garden of The Westin Valencia, adorned with a variety of palm trees, became the foundation of our tropical paradise. We added even more tropical trees and covered our entire backdrop. Our Mandap, nestled within this enchanting setting, with bunting and festoon lighting that crisscrossed the ceiling, evoked the spirit of a traditional Rajasthani ‘Mela’ – a fun fair. And to elevate the setting, we included Persian rugs and velvet lounge seating and cushions.
This infusion of luxury and vibrant aesthetics created a truly magnificent atmosphere.
The ceremony itself was a fun-filled affair where all of our friends and family members joined in and cheered as we took our vows. My uncle conducted the ceremony and explained the meaning behind each ritual. For our Pheras, rounds around the sacred fire, we danced to Bollywood songs making it a joyful memory for all of us. Opting for a cultural ceremony instead of a religious one meant we could respect each other’s religions whilst still having a traditional Indian wedding.
Our The Westin Valencia wedding was a day filled with so much love, laughter and joy. Our hearts were full as we saw every family and friend join into our celebration with so much warmth. The team at The Westin Valencia went above and beyond for us and gave a day we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
